Crystal Soil Instructions
Posted on December 2nd, 2009 No commentsCrystal soil is a water absorbent polymer used to pot plants and cut flowers. Made popular in Asia it is gaining a huge foot print in the united kingdom and europe because of its exotic colours and its ability to absorb water and therefore reduce frequent watering.Crystal Soil comes in three shapes. Crystal Soil Pearls, Crystal Soil cubes and Crystal Soil irregular. The most popular form is Crystal Soil Pearls often called water pearls or water gel beads.
Crystal Soil comes in small packs usually 10g packs. Each seed is as small as a sesame seed and can grow to as big as acorns. A 10g pack of crystal Soil when hydrated equates to two pints or 1 litre.
A 10g Pack of crystal soil should be soaked in at least 1 litre of water to ensure that when the crystal soil beads expand they remain covered in the water
Crystal Soil usually takes 6 to 8 hours to hydrate so its best to leave over night.Ordinary tap water can be used to hydrate crystal soil but distilled water helps crystal soil form fuller.
If you ever wanted to speed up the process of getting your crystal soil fully formed then boiled water works a treat. if you boil the water and allow it to cool down for a couple of minutes you can then add crystal soil to hot water or pour hot water on the crystals. The use of hot water speeds up the formation process and crystal soil gets hydrated in half the normal time.
When Crystal Soil has been left for the appropriate number of hours drain the excess water and use accordingly either for floral arrangements or for other home decor.
