How to Pot Plants in Crystal Soil
Posted on October 21st, 2009 No commentsWhen deciding what plants to pot in crystal soil consider the conditions in which the particular plant thrives. While some plants prefer direct sunlight like herbs some plants do not. The plants that will thrive in crystal soil are generally indoor plants but specifically foilage plants that like humidity and shade.
Transplanting a plant into a Crystal Soil aka hydroculture aka hydroponics is simple although it takes some preparatory work. A plant that is transplanted into crystal soil may grow slowly at first as it adapts to its new environment. However because of the extra space between the crystal soil and the microscopic holes in each crystal pearl it means that the roots of the plants are able to breathe much more easily than with traditional soil which helps to prevent all sorts of rot and and plant diseases.Steps on how to Pot your plants in Crystal Soil
1.) Hydrate Crystal Soil in water for 6 to 8 hours. Drain excess water. If desired you can add liquid fertilser at this time. The adding of liquid fertilizer to the water when hydrating the crystals will ensure your plants grow more vigourously and healthy. Crystal soil will absorb the water and liquid fertilizer and release both a supply of water and feed whenever the plant requires it.
Generally Fertilizers are usually applied either through traditional soil (for uptake by plant roots) so adding liquid fertiliser when hydrating crystal soil will work in the same way. Another technique is to add liquid fertiliser directly to the plants leaves at anytime after potting the plant. This is called Foliar feeding.
2.) Remove selected plant gently from the Soil being careful not to damage it.
3.) Place plant underneath cold running water to get rid of mud, mildew and root rot.Use your hands if necessary to get rid of mud that sticks tightly to the roots and any dead leaves. Be sure not to damage the taproot.
4.) Place the root of the plant in water for a couple of hours. This wil ensure all the dirt and mud fall away in the water but also prepares the plant to adjust to its new environment.
5.) Pot plant into your chosen vase while allowing plants root to stretch.
6.) Add Crystal Soil being sure to layer, mix or use a single colour as appropriate.Make sure crysal soil covers the root of the plant and that the plant is stable. Depending on the choice of vase you may have to place some crystal soil at the bottom of the vase before rooting the plant and then add the rest of the crystal soil.
7.) After the transition from soil to crystal soil some leaves may turn yellow and part of the root may rot.Be sure to cut away the yellow leaves and rotten roots and then re-plant in crystal soil.
8.) Depending on the humidity in the room and the thirst of the plant – some plants drink more water than others – if you notice the crystals growing smaller after a couple of months. Simply remove the plant. Hydrate the crystals in water for 2/3 hours and then root the plant again in Crystal Soil. While hydrating crystal soil you can once again place the plant in a container of water ensuring that the root is covered.
