The benefits of using Crystal Soil for your cut flowers and plants
Posted on October 20th, 2009 No commentsFlowering plants need light, water and nutrients to grow and bloom. You supply a clear vase; Crystal Soil provides an excellent source of water and nutrients. Crystal Soil also known as Water Crystals is a new type of clean, environmentally friendly potting material that comes in an array of beautiful colors.
It can absorb many times its weight in water. It’s as small as a sesame seed but can grow to the size of an acorn. You simply add it to clean water and wait a few hours for the crystals to expand. Then you are ready to pot your plants or cut flowers in the Crystal Soil, just as you would with soil or water.Because Crystal Soil absorbs water so efficiently, you will generally not need to water for several weeks even months. When you notice that the water crystals are starting to shrink, it is time to add water .As long as the crystals are not allowed to dry out entirely, they will retain their ability to absorb water.
You don’t have to worry about mold or mildew forming in crystal soil because the water stays inside the crystals rather than standing in the pot. To show off the colour of crystal soil, you will want to use vases that are made of clear glass or plastic. You can even mix or layer different colors of crystal soil in the same vase for decorative effect.
If the vase begins to get cloudy or the crystals start to get dull, simply rinse the Water Crystals in clean water, drain and re-use. Crystal soil is non toxic to people or pets. The best way to discard spent water crystals is to simply mix it into the soil in your outdoor garden or flowerbeds where it will bio-degrade without affecting plants or lawn grass. In fact, it will benefit your garden soil by increasing moisture retention.
